Don’t let your babies grow up to be couch potatoes. It’s a fact, kids who spend the majority of their summer lounging on the sofa playing Xbox games grow fat and lazy. The statistics paint an alarming story. Today’s children are becoming more and more inactive, exercising only their thumb muscles playing video games and texting friends. In 2008, more than one third of children were overweight. Childhood obesity has more than tripled over the past three decades. Parents who rationalize chubby cheeks and rolls of belly blubber as simply “baby fat,” often find that they have helped raise obese individuals with elevated heart rates, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and other life-limiting issues.
So, mom and dad, take those video game controllers out of their pudgy little hands and get those kids exercising. Exercise doesn’t have to be hard work. Take them swimming, go to the playground, or take them somewhere they’ll have an absolute blast: bowling. Bowling centers are great places for gamers to tap into their desire to rack up points and to win. But the beauty of bowling is that it actually requires kids to get off their behinds and move more than their digits.
So what are you waiting for? Pack the kids into the car and go bowling. It’s exercise disguised as fun.
